Well I got my garlic in the ground late, just after the first of the year, after a heart breaking loss to Snow College, but that's another story... Yes I planted my garlic the first week of January, it's amazing stuff really, and I just can't eat enough. Today is July 5th and it's time to start harvesting and drying my garlic. I used a small garden hand spade to remove the garlic.
I pulled half of what I planted out of the ground today the rest will come out this week as well. These are the smaller heads that were just outside the greenhouse.
All you'll need to prep your garlic for braiding is a trashcan and a pair of sturdy scissors, I of course prefer pink! Remove the bottom outer leaves gently layer by layer until you have a clean white exterior on your garlic, then clip the outer leaves and roots off with your scissors. At this point you'll have something that looks like this.
Next, actually braiding garlic, in the interest of full disclosure I'd like to note that being bald I don't frequently braid anything, but braiding garlic is easy! Start three across, with the left and right on top of the middle. Add another on top in the middle and intertwine them all as you add. it doesn't have to be perfect! In the end it will look something like this.
I hung them from a storage shelf in my shed to dry, please notice all the imperfections in my braiding. I zip tied them together to satisfy the testosterone driven urges!
